Also called reduction mammoplasty and consists of the removal of fatty tissue, mammary glandular tissue and skin in conjunction with a definition of the shape and placement of the breast and areola in a more youthful position.

Breast reduction surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. This is a medication that keeps her asleep and free of pain.

For a reduction mammoplasty, the surgeon removes part of the breast tissue and skin. The nipples can move up to relocate them, for aesthetic reasons.

The surgeon makes three surgical incisions: around the areola (the dark area around the nipples), from the areola down to the crease below the breast and through the lower fold of the breast.

Extra fat, skin and breast tissue are removed. The nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. Frequently, the areola becomes smaller.

The surgeon closes the incisions with stitches to reshape the breast.

Sometimes, liposuction is combined with reduction mammoplasty to improve the shape of the breast and areas of the armpit.
